Cale Parks is your favorite musician’s most adored drummer and percussionist.
First rising to prominence as a founding member of indie prog rock titans Aloha, Cale has grown beyond his roots in Ohio to travel the world as a musician, percussionist, DJ, and performer. From Chicago and New York City, to his current whereabouts in Kansas City, Cale Parks has evolved to redefine what being a musician means in the 21st century. In addition to his years in Aloha, Parks also shared his skills with bands such as Joan of Arc, Yeasayer, and Passion Pit, via recordings and touring.
Cale Parks released his debut solo album Illuminated Manuscript in 2006 and his sophomore follow-up Sparklace in 2008, both through Polyvinyl Record Co. The pair of these albums introduced the complexity, variety, and beauty of Cale’s interior world: behind the bombastic drums and deft percussion playing, a different kind of vibration arose from Parks and was unleashed. Illuminated Manuscript set the stage for Cale’s signature blend of ambient electronica, venturing from haunting to hypnotizing, but always hip, humble, and honest. Sparklace upped the ante with poppier singles to break up the feelings of floating through the sonic ethers that Parks creates. Songs like ”Every Week Ends” and “Two Haunt Me” are particular stunning gems of the era, distillations of the best that moody dance music can offer us – resonance, movement.
The To Swift Mars EP followed in 2009, including another crystalline single in “Eyes Won’t Shut” – highlighting how the music of Cale Parks is dreamy yet rooted in reality. The Lagoon Fool EP and N1 series followed in 2015, which led to a string of collaborations with the French duo Paradis. Boards was released in 2020 just before the world went into lockdown, six tracks showcasing Parks’ return in full form; dazzling compositions of drums, piano, bass, synths, and swirls of orchestral shimmers.
In 2024 Parks released a handful of killer tunes, including “Planet of the Year” and the Crispy Reds EP. From disco and electronic to Africana and beyond, Parks has a knack for combining sounds in an authentic way, whether it’s mixing genres or acoustic and digital elements. Hints of Yellow Magic Orchestra, Aphex Twin, and Boards of Canada blend with Factory Records Haçienda Manchester, underground Detroit techno, deep Chicago house, and the Brooklyn “indie sleaze” Parks lived through to create a unique sound that signifies Cale Parks is an audio pioneer in his own right.
